In the Lima District of Peru, our Women’s Socioeconomic Empowerment Project trains women and mothers who have are survivors of domestic violence. They learn design, tailoring and beading skills and the business skills necessary to run a successful business. The program has had significant impact on the lives of women participants. From the time of their admission into the project, their lives have changed and they are happy and have embraced the program.

Among many of the benefits the women have got from the program include the possibility to help in the household expenses, education for their children and the ability to improve their standard of living. Most of the women have changed from being housewives whose work was to look after the children and carry out house chores and who were fully dependent on their spouses, relatives or parents for financial support to potential business women in the future. Most of the women have confirmed a change even in their marriages. Attending the program has changed the attitudes of their spouses about them and they are now perceived as women who are also capable of changing the financial status of their families. When asked about the projects’ impact so far, the women have said that “before the project we just had to live with our husband`s job or working by ourselves and earning a minimal wage. Now that we are participating in the Willow Tree Roots project we think that we will be economically more independent. We will not have to depend on our husbands or somebody else anymore and that sounds great!”
